A man used a knife to attack people at the Notre Dame Basilica in Nice, France, Thursday, killing three people, authorities say. Several more were injured.
Police have arrested a suspect, according to Mayor Christian Estrosi. Two people were killed inside the church, and another died outside it, according to local media reports.
Separately, another knife attack was reported by the French consulate in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where an assailant attacked the building’s security guard but was arrested.
The Nice attack, which took place in and around a church, is being investigated as a potential act of terrorism, Le Monde reported.
It comes two weeks after the beheading of French teacher Samuel Paty, who was killed days after he used cartoons of the prophet Muhammad in a class discussion about freedom of speech.
Emmanuel Macron has said France will not give in to terror in a call for firmness and unity after the country’s latest terrorist attack left three people dead.
More information about the victims has been slow to emerge, after a massive police response closed off the area to focus on securing the church and investigating the shocking crime.
