US agencies investigating hacking of government networks

Hackers linked to a foreign government breached systems belonging to the U.S. Treasury Department and the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) within the Commerce Department, multiple news outlets reported Sunday. (The Hill)

Reuters, which was first to report the story, said files were stolen from both agencies as a result of the incursion, though the extent of the attack was not immediately known. (The Hill)

The Washington Post reported that the attackers were Russian in origin. (The Hill)

The Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency also confirmed the data security incident, telling CNN in a statement, “We have been working closely with our agency partners regarding recently discovered activity on government networks.” (CNN)

“CISA is providing technical assistance to affected entities as they work to identify and mitigate any potential compromises,” the statement continued. (CNN)

The Trump administration acknowledged reports on Sunday that a group backed by a foreign government carried out a cyberattack on the U.S. Treasury Department and a section of the U.S. Department of Commerce. (CNBC)
