During the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, a multi-car collision occurred, resulting in a dramatic incident that sent a tire hurtling past spectators, creating a heart-stopping moment at one of the United States’ most prominent races.
Video footage shared on social media captured the moment when driver Felix Rosenqvist collided with Kyle Kirkwood, NPR reported.
As a result of the crash, one of Kirkwood’s tires became dislodged and soared through the air, clearing the fence that separates the track from the grandstand.
Fortunately, the tire narrowly missed occupied seats and instead landed on a parked car, according to ESPN. No injuries were reported among the drivers or the spectators.
Following the tire’s flight, Kirkwood’s car made contact with the wall, flipped over, and skidded down the track, emitting sparks.
In a tweet, Kirkwood expressed his disappointment but reassured everyone that he was unharmed: “All good everyone, just disappointed. Thought we could win today.”
