Officials have announced that they believe the body of Bradley Gillespie, a convicted murderer who escaped from an Ohio prison, has been discovered in the Ohio River near Henderson, Kentucky.

Gillespie had been reported missing on Tuesday, along with fellow inmate James Lee, who was captured early Wednesday morning, CBS News reported.

Henderson Police Chief Sean McKinney confirmed that the body was found in close proximity to Gillespie’s last known location.

An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday to confirm the identity. Chief McKinney stated on Sunday that although the information was preliminary, all indications pointed towards the body being that of Mr. Gillespie.

A boater on the river noticed the body and promptly alerted the police around 1:30 p.m. local time. According to McKinney, investigators believe that the body had been submerged in the water for approximately “four to five days.”

Law enforcement had previously conducted searches in the area where the body was ultimately found. However, McKinney explained that it is likely Gillespie’s body had not yet surfaced during those initial searches.
