According to Chicago police, the Memorial Day weekend witnessed a tragic surge in violence, resulting in the deaths of nine individuals and injuring 34 others.
One incident occurred when three people were standing on the sidewalk in the 9100-block of South Harper Avenue. Around 1:45 a.m., an unidentified individual drove up and opened fire, shooting the victims.
The wounded included a 59-year-old man, a 57-year-old woman, and a 77-year-old man. They were swiftly transported to local hospitals for treatment, ABC7 Chicago reported.
The violence unfolded despite Mayor Brandon Johnson’s recent implementation of a new safety plan, which aimed to increase police presence on the streets and involve community groups in efforts to mitigate violence within the city.
