Representative Chip Roy, a conservative Republican from Texas, strongly criticized the preliminary debt deal reached by Speaker Kevin McCarthy and President Biden, referring to it as a “turd-sandwich.”
He challenged McCarthy’s assertion that over 95% of the conference was supportive of the deal, pointing out that he was aware of more dissenting voices, The Hill reported.
Roy explained that the lawmakers had not yet fully grasped the unfavorable aspects of the agreement.
In response to the Republican argument that Democrats gained nothing from the deal, Roy disagreed and highlighted that the agreement did not include significant budget cuts beyond 2025.
He expressed disappointment that the deal failed to eliminate clean energy tax incentives, lacked work requirements for Medicaid recipients, and did not address border security—an issue that Roy believes is crucial for exerting leverage.
He further criticized the inclusion of most of the funding for the IRS in the agreement.
Roy took to Twitter to voice his concerns, emphasizing the minimal spending reductions achieved by freezing spending levels and expressing dissatisfaction with the overall outcome of the deal.
