Russia’s Interior Ministry has issued an arrest warrant for U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham on Monday in response to his comments regarding the conflict in Ukraine.
In a video released by the office of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, edited portions of Graham’s meeting with Zelenskyy on Friday were presented, the Associated Press reported.
The Republican Senator from South Carolina can be heard acknowledging the casualties among Russian forces and praising the effectiveness of U.S. military support to Ukraine as a worthwhile investment.
Although the video seemed to compile Graham’s comments from different parts of the conversation, their juxtaposition in the short clip provoked outrage in Russia.
Dmitry Peskov, the spokesperson for Russian President Vladimir Putin, expressed strong disapproval on Sunday, stating that “it is difficult to imagine a greater disgrace for a country than having such senators.”
Following Peskov’s comments, the Investigative Committee, Russia’s leading criminal investigation agency, initiated a criminal inquiry against Graham.
The Interior Ministry subsequently issued an arrest warrant for him, as officially recorded on Monday among their list of wanted criminal suspects.
In response to these developments, Graham took to Twitter, expressing his satisfaction by stating, “To know that my commitment to Ukraine has drawn the ire of Putin’s regime brings me immense joy.”
