Following an exhibition titled “Kemet: Egypt in Hip Hop, Jazz, Soul & Funk” at the National Museum of Antiquities (RMO) in Leiden, a team of archaeologists from the Dutch museum has faced a ban on conducting excavations in Egypt’s Saqqara necropolis.
The Egyptian authorities expressed their disapproval of the exhibition, accusing the museum of distorting history with its “Afrocentric” approach, CNN reported.
This development was reported by the Dutch newspaper NRC on Monday, stating that the head of foreign missions of the Egyptian Antiquities Service conveyed their concerns to the RMO via email.
Wim Weijland, the museum’s managing director, confirmed to CNN through email that the Egyptian authorities have indeed refused to grant the institution a permit for the upcoming excavation season in Saqqara.
He further verified that the journalist who wrote the NRC article had seen the email from the Egyptian authorities.
