Texas Governor Greg Abbott declared on Thursday that an inflatable border was being erected along the Texas-Mexico border to enhance the deterrence of illegal immigration into the country.

These floating barriers are designed to dissuade illegal crossings at key locations along the Rio Grande River, with the initial installation of 1,000 feet planned near Eagle Pass.

Images of the inflatable barriers depict interconnected inflatable spheres that rotate when someone tries to climb them, Fox News has reported.

According to a press release from Governor Abbott’s office, the strategy of implementing inflatable barriers along the border aims to proactively impede unauthorized crossings between official ports of entry by increasing the difficulty of crossing the Rio Grande and reaching the Texas side of the southern border.

In addition to announcing the installation of the new border barriers, Governor Abbott signed a package of six border security bills.

These legislations are intended to assist the state in “holding the line” as Texas faces a surge in illegal immigration, smuggling of weapons, and the influx of dangerous drugs from Mexico.
