An asteroid Empire State Building-sized will come close to Earth

This week, Earth will experience the passage of an asteroid of skyscraper-like proportions, although there is no actual danger to our planet.

The asteroid in question, named Asteroid 1994 XD, was first identified by the Spacewatch group at Kitt Peak Observatory in Arizona back in 1994, BGR reported.

On Monday, June 12, at approximately 9:00 pm ET, Asteroid 1994 XD is projected to come within a distance of 1.8 million miles from Earth.

While 1.8 million miles may seem quite distant, it is worth noting that this is about eight times the average distance between Earth and the moon.

However, due to the asteroid’s substantial size and its close proximity to our planet, organizations like NASA consider it a potentially hazardous asteroid.

This assessment is particularly significant considering the estimated diameter of the skyscraper-sized asteroid, which ranges between 1,214 and 2,723 feet.
