According to four sources familiar with the matter, Ted Kaczynski, commonly known as the “Unabomber,” died by suicide.
Kaczynski, aged 81 and suffering from late-stage cancer, was discovered unresponsive in his cell at the Federal Medical Center in Butner, North Carolina, around 12:30 a.m. on Saturday.
Emergency responders performed CPR and successfully revived him before transferring him to a hospital, the Associated Press reports.
However, Kaczynski was later pronounced dead on Saturday morning. The sources spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to publicly discuss Kaczynski’s death.
The timing of Kaczynski’s death raises questions amid the increased scrutiny faced by the federal Bureau of Prisons in recent years, particularly following the suicide of wealthy financier Jeffrey Epstein in a federal jail in 2019.
