On a misty evening in Australia’s wine country, tragedy struck as a bus transporting wedding guests veered off the road, resulting in the loss of 10 lives and leaving 25 individuals injured, according to authorities on Monday.

Police Assistant Commissioner Tracy Chapman revealed that the 58-year-old driver has been apprehended and is currently detained at a Cessnock police station, awaiting charges, the Associated Press has reported.

While Chapman did not disclose specific allegations or confirm whether speed played a role, she informed reporters that there is substantial evidence to support forthcoming charges.

The accident occurred shortly after 11:30 p.m. on Sunday amidst foggy conditions at a roundabout on Wine Country Drive in the town of Greta, situated in the Hunter Valley region of New South Wales, north of Sydney.

Prior to the incident, the guests had attended a wedding at the Wandin Estate Winery and were en route to their accommodations in Singleton, explained Chapman.

One guest, speaking to Seven News, reminisced about the beautiful day and described the wedding as a fairytale affair.
