Following the historic indictment of former President Donald Trump on federal criminal charges, Attorney General Merrick Garland addressed the public for the first time.

Speaking at an event focused on combating violent crime, Garland responded to questions regarding the case but refrained from discussing specific details, ABC News has reported.

Nevertheless, he expressed admiration for special counsel Jack Smith and his team, countering accusations made by Trump and other Republicans about the alleged politicization of the Justice Department.

Garland emphasized the importance of independence and accountability within the Justice Department when he appointed Mr. Smith.

In his statement, the attorney general commended Smith, a seasoned career prosecutor, for assembling a group of skilled and experienced prosecutors and agents who are deeply committed to maintaining the highest standards of integrity.

Garland redirected any inquiries related to the matter to the filings made by the prosecution team in court, indicating that the legal process would address relevant questions.
