In response to receiving threats, Mayor Montserrat Caballero of Tijuana, a Mexican border city, has made the decision to reside at an army base for her personal safety.
The mayor’s announcement came after the discovery of seven deceased individuals who had been placed in a pickup truck, CBS News reported.
The truck was found abandoned at a gas station in Tijuana, with its doors left open. Inside the vehicle’s back seat, a body was found wrapped in a blanket, while six additional bodies were concealed beneath tires and wooden boards.
Due to the threats she has received, Mayor Caballero stated, “I will be residing at the base.” According to local media, the army base is situated approximately 5 miles from the city hall, on the southern outskirts of Tijuana.
Although Mayor Caballero did not disclose the source of the threats, the Tijuana city government issued a statement indicating that they were connected to the mayor’s administration’s successful efforts in confiscating weapons and apprehending individuals involved in acts of violence.
Tijuana, located across the border from San Diego, California, is known to be affected by ongoing territorial disputes between various drug cartels.
