Following Donald Trump’s plea of not guilty to federal charges of hoarding classified documents and obstructing an investigation, Republicans in Congress swiftly expressed their support for the former president.

Speaker Kevin McCarthy wasted no time and promptly sent out a fundraising email denouncing the ongoing “witch hunt” against Trump, urging donors to stand with him.

In the Senate, Republican leader Mitch McConnell took a cautious stance, refraining from criticizing the former president directly.

When asked for his opinion on the matter, McConnell declined to comment, stating, “I’m not going to start commenting on the various candidates we have for president,” the Associated Press has reported.

Meanwhile, during a public meeting held in the Capitol basement, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene drew parallels between Trump’s case and the federal prosecution of individuals involved in the January 6, 2021 insurrection.

Greene suggested that both instances involved scrutiny of the Justice Department rather than the defendants themselves.

Although many Republicans admitted to not having fully read the 49-page federal indictment, they staunchly stood by Trump and embraced his grievances against the federal justice system as their own.

The mounting legal jeopardy faced by the former president has quickly transformed into a political rallying cry for the Republican Party.

The Republican support for Trump in the face of these charges underscores their concerns about the fairness and impartiality of the justice system, as reported by the Associated Press.

While their reactions varied in tone and intensity, the majority of Republicans have aligned themselves with Trump, further polarizing the political landscape.

It remains to be seen how this legal saga will unfold and impact the political landscape leading up to the next presidential election.

As the trial progresses, the nation will closely watch the actions and statements of the Republicans, and whether their allegiance to Trump will endure or evolve.
