
Tragically, yet another destructive fire erupted in New York City on Tuesday morning, resulting from a blaze caused by lithium-ion batteries in e-bikes.
The incident claimed the lives of four individuals and left two others in critical condition, Fox Business reported.
The New York City Fire Department promptly responded to the emergency, tackling a “heavy fire” at an e-bike store located on 80 Madison Street in Manhattan at approximately 12:15 a.m., as reported in the department’s tweet.
During the incident, seven residents residing in the building above HQ E-Bike Repair sustained injuries. At the time of the firefighters’ arrival, six of the injured individuals were in critical condition.
Additionally, one firefighter sustained minor injuries while combating the fire.
Tragically, out of the six residents in critical condition, four succumbed to their injuries, according to FDNY Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh, who briefed reporters on Tuesday morning.
She unequivocally stated that the fire was caused by lithium-ion batteries present in e-bikes.
