During construction work in the Southwark borough of South London, a remarkable find was made—a Roman mausoleum adorned with exquisite mosaic flooring.
Described as an “incredibly rare” discovery, the Museum of London Archaeology has confirmed it as the most well-preserved Roman mausoleum ever found in Britain.
Excavations of the site revealed an array of artifacts, including coins, fragments of pottery, and roofing tiles, the Good News Network has reported.
Additionally, the presence of 80 Roman burials suggests that the mausoleum was likely utilized by the city’s affluent inhabitants. Notably, no burial coffins were uncovered during the excavation.
The area where this remarkable find was made, situated near popular tourist attractions such as Borough Market, London Bridge, and the Shard (London’s tallest building), has previously yielded Roman treasures.
