The congressional committee witnessed a fiery political clash as John Durham, the special counsel appointed by the Justice Department to investigate the FBI’s inquiry into Russia’s ties with Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign, testified on Wednesday.
Democrats criticized Durham’s investigation, while Republicans argued that his findings provided evidence of an anti-Trump bias within law enforcement, the Associated Press has reported.
The hearing, held against the backdrop of a 37-count indictment against Trump for illegally retaining classified documents, lasted for approximately six hours but yielded little new information.
Durham reiterated many of the strongest condemnations outlined in his 306-page report when questioned by Republicans.
Democrats, on the other hand, criticized the four-year investigation for resulting in only one conviction and failing to substantiate Trump’s claims of uncovering the “crime of the century.”
While the hearing shed light on well-documented law enforcement errors during the Trump-Russia investigation, Durham’s testimony carried additional political significance due to the ongoing criminal case against Trump.
