Following a distressing incident, a man from Texas is currently in critical condition after being shot while working as an Uber driver.
According to the police, the woman accused of shooting the 52-year-old victim, Daniel Piedra Garcia, claimed that she believed he was attempting to kidnap her.
Surprisingly, instead of notifying the authorities, she initially contacted her boyfriend, as revealed in court documents, KGNS TV NEWS reported.
Didi Lopez, the niece of the victim, expressed the family’s disbelief over the incident, stating, “We had seen news stories, but it never even crossed our minds that it would be him.”
The shooting occurred on Friday and involved a passenger from Kentucky.
Lopez further shared that her uncle had been enthusiastic about his job as an Uber driver. She said, “He was genuinely excited about driving for Uber. Not only was he supporting his family, but he was also connecting with numerous individuals.”
According to the arrest report, the alleged shooter, Phoebe Copas, informed the police that she opened fire because she believed Piedra was kidnapping her when she noticed an exit sign on U.S. 54 indicating Fort Bliss and Juarez, Mexico.
Piedra’s niece speculates that stereotypes associated with the border region might have played a role in her uncle being shot.
