Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, known for his far-right ideologies, has been barred from running for office until 2030 by a panel of judges. T

he decision was made based on the conclusion that Bolsonaro had abused his power and spread baseless doubts about the country’s electronic voting system.

This ruling significantly disrupts Bolsonaro’s political future and greatly diminishes his chances of regaining power, The Associated Press reported.

Five judges on Brazil’s highest electoral court unanimously agreed that Bolsonaro had utilized government communication channels to advance his campaign and fostered mistrust in the electoral process.

Two judges dissented from the decision.

The case centered around a meeting held on July 18, 2022, in which Bolsonaro utilized government personnel, the state television channel, and the presidential palace in Brasilia to inform foreign ambassadors that the electronic voting system of the country was rigged.

Judge Carmen Lucia, a Supreme Court justice, delivered the decisive vote that formed the majority, stating that “the facts are indisputable.”

Bolsonaro, in response to the ruling, expressed his discontent during a press conference in Minas Gerais, claiming that the trial was unfair and politically motivated.
