A California startup, Alef Automotive, has received certification from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to conduct testing on a vehicle they describe as a flying car.

This achievement marks the first time that a fully electric vehicle capable of both flying and traveling on roads has obtained approval from the US government, CNN reports.

The vehicle, named the “Model A,” is touted by Alef Automotive as a groundbreaking innovation. It possesses the ability to operate on public roads like a conventional car, complete with parking capabilities, while also featuring vertical takeoff and landing functionality for flight.

The Model A is designed to accommodate one or two occupants and boasts a road range of 200 miles, along with a flying range of 110 miles.

Alef Automotive plans to offer the vehicle for sale at a price of $300,000 per unit, with the first deliveries anticipated by the end of 2025.

The FAA has confirmed the issuance of a special airworthiness certificate to the company, allowing for limited purposes such as exhibition, research, and development.

While several companies are currently working on all-electric vehicle takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft, the FAA clarifies that Alef is not the first of its kind to receive a special airworthiness certificate.

However, Alef emphasizes that its vehicle stands out due to its dual functionality on roads and in the air, its resemblance to a regular car, and its ability to park in standard parking spaces.
