Maryland Representative Jamie Raskin, known for his prominent role in the impeachment proceedings against former President Donald Trump and the investigation into the January 6, 2021, riot, announced on Friday that he will not be running for the U.S. Senate seat that will become available due to the retirement of Senator Ben Cardin.

Raskin, currently serving as the top Democrat on the House Oversight and Reform Committee and in his fourth term, had been considering a run for the Senate seat.

However, in a statement, he expressed his decision to seek re-election in the House instead, NBC News has reported.

In his statement, Raskin explained, “At this moment, I believe the best way for me to make the greatest difference in American politics in 2024 and beyond is this: to run for re-election to the House of Representatives in Maryland’s extraordinary 8th District.”

He further noted that under normal circumstances, he would likely be making this announcement, implying that the current political climate influenced his decision to focus on his House re-election campaign.
