Threads app signs up 100m users in less than a week

Threads, the social media platform aiming to rival Twitter, has achieved a remarkable milestone by acquiring over 100 million users in under five days.

The app, developed by Meta, the parent company of Instagram, has surpassed the previous record set by OpenAI’s ChatGPT app, the BBC reported.

Threads was launched on both Apple and Android app stores in 100 countries, including the UK, last Wednesday. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg expressed his astonishment at the rapid achievement of this milestone, stating that he “couldn’t believe” it happened so quickly.

However, the platform has faced some obstacles. It is currently unavailable in mainland Europe due to uncertainties regarding its compliance with EU data privacy regulations.

Thierry Breton, the EU’s industry commissioner, recently commented on the situation, suggesting that taking the necessary time to ensure compliance would be a prudent approach.

Despite this setback, Threads has experienced exponential growth. Meta reported that the app garnered 10 million users within the first seven hours of its launch, and the number surpassed 30 million by Thursday morning.

Within approximately 24 hours, the user count had more than doubled, demonstrating its rapid rise in popularity.
