Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed strong criticism towards NATO leaders, including President Biden, during the annual gathering of the military alliance’s leaders, injecting fresh diplomatic tension into the proceedings.

Zelensky condemned their reluctance to extend membership to his war-torn country, characterizing it as a display of weakness and absurdity, the New York Post reported.

His remarks came shortly after Biden mentioned the development of new language concerning Ukraine’s potential NATO accession.

Zelensky took to Twitter, stating, “On our way to Vilnius, we received indications that discussions are taking place regarding certain wording that excludes Ukraine.

I want to stress that this pertains to an invitation for NATO membership, not Ukraine’s actual membership.”

He continued, “It is unprecedented and absurd when no specific time frame is set for extending the invitation or granting Ukraine membership. Moreover, vague conditions are introduced even for the invitation itself.”

Zelensky further remarked, “It appears that there is neither readiness to invite Ukraine to NATO nor to make it a full-fledged member of the Alliance.

This implies that a window of opportunity is being left open to negotiate Ukraine’s membership with Russia.

For Russia, this serves as motivation to continue its acts of terror. Uncertainty is a sign of weakness, and I will openly address this matter during the summit.”
