In response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, President Biden has given authorization for US military leaders to deploy up to 3,000 reservists to Europe.
The purpose of this order is to reinforce the presence of US troops already stationed overseas as part of Operation Atlantic Resolve, as stated in a White House statement released after the president’s recent five-day trip to Europe, which included attendance at a two-day NATO summit in Lithuania.
Citing his authority as President under the Constitution and US laws, President Biden emphasized the necessity of augmenting the active Armed Forces of the United States for the effective execution of Operation Atlantic Resolve within the area of responsibility of the United States European Command.
The president, aged 80, issued this statement, the New York Post reported.
According to the order, a maximum of 3,000 reservists may be activated at any given time, with no more than 450 of them being members of the Individual Ready Reserve.
The Individual Ready Reserve is comprised of trained soldiers who have previously served in the Active Army or Selected Reserve.
Operation Atlantic Resolve was launched in 2014 following Russia’s invasion of the Crimean Peninsula.
Its objective is to strengthen the deterrence capabilities along the eastern flank of NATO allies in the United States.
