A Long Island architect has been indicted for murder in connection with three of the 11 victims in the notorious Gilgo Beach murders, which have remained unsolved for a significant period of time.

The breakthrough in the case occurred when investigators, pursuing a new lead, discovered that the DNA from a pizza consumed by the suspect matched genetic material found on the remains of the women.

The accused individual, Rex Heuermann, has resided near the location where the remains were discovered for many years.

He is now facing charges for the killings of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello, as reported by the Associated Press.

Additionally, authorities consider him the primary suspect in the murder of another woman, whose body was also found concealed and bound in dense vegetation along a remote beach highway.

Heuermann, aged 59, was apprehended on Thursday as part of a reinvigorated investigation that connected him to a pickup truck reported by a witness during one of the victims’ disappearances in 2010.

In March, investigators covertly followed Heuermann and obtained his DNA from a discarded pizza crust found in a trash can in Manhattan.

This DNA sample was then matched to DNA extracted from a hair discovered on a restraint used in the commission of the killings.
