Due to relentless monsoon rains, thousands of residents in New Delhi have been compelled to evacuate their homes as floodwaters continue to rise, leading to overflowing rivers in and around the Indian capital.
As of Friday, the death toll has reached at least 91 individuals, and millions of lives have been severely disrupted due to the ongoing heavy rainfall, NBC News reported.
Officials in New Delhi have reported that water levels in the Yamuna River, a significant tributary of the Ganges, have reached the highest point in 45 years, according to Reuters.
As a precautionary measure, all schools in Delhi were closed on Monday, and evacuations began on Wednesday to mitigate the risks of flooding.
The overflow of the river has resulted in water levels rising up to people’s calves and even waistlines in the riverside areas.
Residents in low-lying regions have been forced to wade through contaminated waters as they have no alternative.
The floods have also affected animals, with some individuals struggling to guide trapped cows to safety.
Furthermore, the torrential rains have triggered landslides and flooding in northern India, compounding the already dire situation.
