Following former President Donald Trump’s announcement of being a target in the Justice Department’s probe into the events of January 6, several Republican lawmakers came to his defense.
Trump stated that he would appear before the grand jury in four days, anticipating that Special Counsel Jack Smith, whom he referred to as “deranged,” would indict him.
He claimed that this situation represents an unprecedented level of political weaponization and election interference, Breitbart News has reported.
Trump expressed his dismay, describing it as a dark and sad period for the nation, in a post on Truth Social.
In response, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) dismissed the news as “absolute bull***t” and claimed that it was the Democrats’ only way to defeat President Trump.
Elise Stefanik (R-NY), the GOP House Conference Chair, characterized the potential indictment as “unprecedented” and labeled it a corrupt witch hunt.
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) criticized the Department of Justice, accusing them of targeting Trump, the leading political opponent of President Biden.
McCarthy argued that this was an unfair application of justice and asserted that the American public is weary of such actions.
The Republican lawmakers rallied behind Trump, expressing their disapproval of the DOJ’s actions and framing them as politically motivated attacks against the former president.
