According to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, a man who had recently been terminated from a shipyard in Louisiana returned to his former workplace and fatally shot two ex-coworkers.
The identity of the suspect has not been disclosed, but he was engaged in a shootout with deputies and died less than two hours after the incident.
Deputies responded to the FMT Shipyard in Harvey, located across the Mississippi River from New Orleans, around 1 p.m.
They discovered two individuals unresponsive, with at least one gunshot wound, and unfortunately, both were pronounced dead at the scene, NBC News reported.
The sheriff’s office is withholding the victims’ identities until their next of kin can be notified.
Sheriff Joseph Lopinto stated during a news briefing that there is no indication that the two employees had any connection to the suspect’s termination.
Following the shooting, the suspect fled the scene and was later picked up by his mother near the shipyard. She dropped him off at his apartment on Manhattan Boulevard in the 2100 block.
Lopinto clarified that deputies do not believe the suspect’s mother was aware of the shooting incident.
Around 2:45 p.m., deputies approached the suspect near the apartment complex as he was heading towards a dumpster.
Lopinto explained that the suspect “picked up his firearm and started firing shots at our officers.” In response, multiple officers returned fire, resulting in the suspect’s death at the scene.
Fortunately, no deputies were injured during the shootout. The investigation into the incident is currently ongoing.
