In an effort to combat theft, San Francisco Safeway stores have taken measures to enhance security by installing security gates at their self-checkout kiosks.

Customers using the self-service lines at various Safeway stores in the Bay Area are now required to scan their receipts on an automated plastic gate before exiting the store.

The decision to implement these security measures comes as a response to the high levels of theft experienced not only at Safeway stores but also at other retailers across San Francisco, the Daily Mail has reported.

The city has been facing a challenging situation with a combination of factors, including high inflation, a surge in crime rates, and reduced foot traffic, contributing to what has been termed a ‘retail apocalypse.’

San Francisco has been disproportionately affected by these closures, with crime rising by 15 percent, as reported by the city’s police department.

Furthermore, the impact of a state-wide shoplifting law that downgrades stealing goods worth less than $950 from a felony to a less serious misdemeanor crime has also added to the challenge.

In a statement made on Monday, a Safeway spokesperson explained that the recent changes, including the installation of security gates, were implemented in select stores across the Bay Area to ensure a safe and welcoming shopping experience for customers and associates, given the escalating incidents of theft.

The spokesperson emphasized that these security improvements were part of long-planned measures aimed at curbing theft and ensuring the well-being of employees while fostering a welcoming environment for customers.
