According to a Kyiv official who spoke to CNN, Ukrainian forces were responsible for the drone strikes that took place in Moscow early on Monday.

The official, representing Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence, stated that their agency conducted the operation, which Russia referred to as a “terrorist attack of the Kiev regime,” using the Russian spelling for Ukraine’s capital.

The Kyiv official requested anonymity as they had not been authorized to speak publicly about the incident.

However, Ukraine’s minister of Digital Transformation, Mykhailo Fedorov, also claimed responsibility for the attack, CNN has reported.

He oversees the country’s “Army of Drones” procurement plan and mentioned that more strikes could be expected in the future.

The drone strikes targeted two non-residential buildings in the Russian capital, one of which was close to the Ministry of Defense headquarters.

Russian authorities reported that they successfully “thwarted” the attack, and Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin stated on Telegram that there were no serious damages or casualties.

Nevertheless, the incident serves as a reminder of the capabilities of Kyiv’s drones and underscores Ukraine’s efforts to bring the conflict closer to Russia.

In response to the attack, Russia’s Ministry of Defense stated that they neutralized two drones using electronic warfare measures, causing them to crash.
