House Republican lines up behind McCarthy on impeachment

House Republicans find themselves torn between two opposing forces regarding the prospect of impeaching Joe Biden: the enthusiasm of conservatives eager to target the president and the need to protect their members in pro-Biden districts.

During a closed-door GOP meeting on Wednesday, Speaker Kevin McCarthy brought up the topic of impeachment but advised caution. He emphasized that any potential impeachment inquiry would only be initiated if there was substantial evidence to support it.

As of now, McCarthy stated that they haven’t gathered enough evidence to start such an inquiry. He also cautioned members against exaggerating or overstating the evidence they have against the president, Politico has reported.

Interestingly, this is the second consecutive day that McCarthy has moderated his stance on impeachment. Initially, he had hinted on Fox News that the House GOP was getting close to launching a formal impeachment effort.

This apparent flip-flop highlights the sensitivity of the impeachment issue for the narrow five-seat majority that the Republicans hold, particularly in districts that lean towards supporting President Biden.
