Judge assigned to Trump’s Jan. 6 case is a tough punisher of Capitol rioters

The federal judge presiding over the election fraud case involving former President Donald Trump has gained a reputation for being one of the most stringent enforcers against rioters involved in the attack on the U.S. Capitol, which was fueled by Trump’s baseless claims of a stolen election.

Notably, she has ruled against Trump in the past as well, the Washington Times has reported.

Trump is scheduled to appear before U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan on Thursday. Judge Chutkan, a former assistant public defender, was nominated to the bench by President Barack Obama.

Throughout the Jan. 6, 2021, riot cases, she has been known to hand down prison sentences that are tougher than what the Justice Department prosecutors recommended.

On Tuesday, Trump was indicted on federal felony charges for his persistent efforts to overturn the 2020 election results during the two months leading up to the violent assault on the U.S. Capitol by his supporters.

His upcoming appearance before Judge Chutkan brings attention to her history of taking a firm stance against those involved in the Capitol attack.
