Poland puts NATO on alert after Belarus violates airspace

On Tuesday (August 1), the Polish Ministry of Defence issued a statement indicating that, based on the analysis presented by commanders and service chiefs, it was confirmed that on August 1, 2023, two Belarusian helicopters violated Polish airspace.

The helicopters were engaged in training exercises near the border at the time of the incident, the Daily Express has reported.

On the other hand, Minsk refutes any claims of airspace infringement.

According to a statement from the Polish Ministry of Defence, the Belarusian side had already given prior notification to Poland about the training drills.

During the border crossing, the aircraft reportedly flew at an extremely low altitude, making it challenging for radar systems to detect.

The Polish Ministry of Defence stated that due to this low altitude flight, their radar systems did not register any violation of Polish airspace. As a precautionary measure, NATO has also been informed about the incident.

The Belarusian Ministry of Defense asserted that the accusations of the Mi-24 and Mi-8 helicopters from the Belarusian Air Force violating the Polish border are unfounded and merely fabricated by the Polish military and leadership.

According to them, these allegations are an attempt to justify the buildup of troops and equipment near the Belarusian border.
