The Federal Election Commission (FEC) is set to engage in discussions with experts and the general public regarding a potential clarification of rules pertaining to the utilization of artificial intelligence (AI) in political campaigns.
During a meeting held on Thursday, all six members of the commission unanimously agreed to deliberate on the revised petition presented by the consumer advocacy group Public Citizen.
This decision followed a previous instance in June where the three Republican members of the commission had resisted advancing the petition, leading to a deadlock with a 3-3 vote, The Hill reported.
It’s important to note that the recent vote doesn’t signify an immediate alteration of the rule regarding AI in campaigns.
Instead, it signifies a step forward in the process, allowing for the consideration of public comments.
Despite joining the rest of the commission in supporting the advancement of the proposal, Republican Commissioner Allen Dickerson voiced reservations about the FEC’s jurisdiction in addressing the application of AI in political campaigns.
