Nearly 50,000 Americans died by suicide in 2022, a record-high number

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported on Thursday that a total of 49,449 individuals in the United States died by suicide in the year 2022.

This figure marks a 2.6% rise from the 48,183 cases recorded in 2021, establishing it as the highest number of suicides ever documented.

These findings, presented in a recent report from the federal health agency, are based on provisional data, ABC News has reported.

The most substantial increase occurred within the demographic of adults aged 65 and older, exhibiting an 8.1% surge compared to the figures from 2021.

Additionally, the second-highest rise was observed among individuals aged 45 to 64, demonstrating a 6.6% elevation.

There was also a minor increase in the age group of 25 to 44, albeit just 0.7%.

Researchers further noted a general upswing in suicide rates across genders, with a 2.3% increase among men and a 2.8% rise among women.
