Special counsel Jack Smith seeks Jan. 2 start date

Special counsel Jack Smith has put forth a proposal to commence the trial for former President Donald Trump’s criminal charges related to his efforts to overturn his loss to President Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election, suggesting a commencement date of January 2.

In a filing submitted to the federal court in Washington, D.C., Smith asserted that this chosen trial date would serve to honor the public’s fervent desire for a swift trial, particularly in a case of such magnitude.

Within the eight-page submission, Smith outlined that the prosecution’s presentation to jurors is estimated to last no more than four to six weeks, effectively streamlining the proceedings, CNBC reported.

The filing also outlined that the special counsel anticipates completing a substantial portion of the evidentiary production, which is slated to be handed over to Trump by August 28.

On this date, a status conference is scheduled, during which Smith indicated that a trial date might be set.

The forthcoming week will witness Trump’s legal team proposing their preferred trial date as well.
