According to individuals familiar with the matter, former U.S. President Donald Trump is set to forgo participation in the upcoming inaugural Republican primary debate.

Instead, he plans to engage in an online interview with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson, as reported by the New York Times.

For several months, Trump has hinted that he might opt out of the debate scheduled for next week in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

His rationale revolves around the belief that it would be unwise to provide opponents an opportunity to assail him, considering his substantial lead among Republicans in national polls.

Trump has also expressed dissatisfaction with Fox, the debate’s host, citing its recent coverage of him.

His potential absence from the event might shift the spotlight to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who trails significantly in the polls.

DeSantis could potentially become the target of attacks from fellow candidates aiming to position themselves as the primary alternative to the former president.

Steven Cheung, Trump’s campaign spokesperson, mentioned that no definitive decisions had been made regarding the candidate’s debate plans.
