For the past half-year, over 12,000 individuals suspected of belonging to El Salvador’s most notorious gangs have been confined to their cells within the infamous mega prison in Tecoluca.
This institution, known as the Centre for the Confinement of Terrorism (CECOT), houses a grim existence for its inmates.
Amidst its sprawling confines, prisoners are imploring authorities for sustenance and medical aid, particularly for those terminally ill inmates who are facing their final moments, the Daily Mail reported.
Within the prison’s confines, an astonishing 12,114 inmates are crowded together, many of whom belong to bitter rival factions, namely MS-13 and Calle 18, two of the most feared gangs in the region.
History has shown that these factions’ foot soldiers seize any opportunity to eliminate their adversaries.
Each 100-square-meter cell is crammed with around 75 notoriously hazardous inmates who sleep on metal bunks. They are compelled to share a mere two toilets and two sinks.
Lacking mattresses and deprived of the chance to experience fresh air outdoors, these inmates endure regular mistreatment and torment from the prison guards, according to human rights organizations.
