President Joe Biden ignited a wave of criticism during his visit to Maui when he made a remark that seemingly drew a comparison between the deadly wildfires ravaging the Hawaiian island and the potential loss of his ’67 Corvette, causing uproar.
The destructive wildfires, which erupted on August 8, swept mercilessly across Maui, resulting in the near-total devastation of the historic and popular town of Lahaina.
This catastrophic event led to the destruction of residences and businesses, and tragically, the loss of over 100 lives.
Presently, approximately 850 individuals remain unaccounted for, with prospects of locating them alive being grim, as stated by authorities, Newsweek reported.
In response to mounting pressure to visit the island, President Biden journeyed to Maui on Monday.
Accompanied by First Lady Jill Biden, he traveled by helicopter to the areas hardest hit by the disaster before engaging with local officials and community leaders.
While addressing the gathered crowd in Lahaina, President Biden conveyed his empathy for the experience of losing a home.
“I don’t want to compare difficulties but we have a little sense, Jill and I, of what it’s like to lose a home,” he said. “Years ago now, 15 years ago, I was in Washington doing Meet the Press. It was a sunny Sunday,” he continued.
“Lightning struck at home, on a little lake that’s outside of our home—not a lake, a big pond,—and hit a wire that came up underneath our home into the heating ducts and air conditioning ducts,” he added.
“To make a long story short, I almost lost my wife, my ’67 Corvette, and my cat.”
Certain individuals, particularly those aligned with conservative viewpoints, did not perceive the analogy favorably. They accused the president of displaying insensitivity toward the tragic events unfolding in Maui.
