AI quadcopter has beaten human champions at drone racing

In a remarkable development, Swiss researchers have introduced a compact drone enhanced by artificial intelligence that surpasses the performance of many top-tier human competitors.

The AI-infused quadcopter drone effortlessly maneuvered its way through an indoor racing circuit, completing the course in a matter of seconds, NPR reported.

Notably, it emerged victorious over its human adversary in 15 out of 25 races, as detailed in a study published today within the pages of the journal Nature.

Elia Kaufmann, an autonomy engineer previously associated with the University of Zurich in Switzerland and currently affiliated with Skydio, a drone company headquartered in Redwood City, California, underlined the significance of this achievement: “This is the first time that an AI has challenged and beaten human champions in a real-world competitive sport.”
