Ordinarily, a Ford Econoline E-250 van would scarcely merit more than a passing glance.
Yet, this specific nondescript gray van deviates from the norm—it stands as a comprehensively equipped surveillance vehicle.
However, it doesn’t belong to the category of vans that occasionally populate lists of wireless network identifiers. Instead, its tenure within governmental operations was devoted to surveillance activities on behalf of NASA.
Presently available in Chicago, the 2006 Econoline E-250 showcases remarkably minimal mileage on its odometer—merely 1,863 miles, ArsTechnica reported.
Although the listed price of $26,795 significantly exceeds estimates offered by pricing references for a vehicle of its vintage, these references overlook the retractable cameras, radios, audio and video recording equipment, as well as monitors that constitute a substantial portion of the van’s interior.
As indicated by a manufacturer’s plate, Innovative Surveillance Technology in Florida undertook the van’s conversion, working in collaboration with NASA’s Protective Services division.
NASA’s official website elucidates that Protective Services is tasked with upholding “state and federal laws and administrative regulations, providing emergency medical care, fire and rescue services, and providing an appropriate incident response to any situation.”
