Tesla faces federal probe over vehicle range after Reuters report

Following a report by Reuters indicating that Tesla may have exaggerated the potential driving range of its vehicles, federal prosecutors are currently examining the veracity of Tesla’s performance claims, as reported by the Wall Street Journal on Wednesday.

In July, Reuters disclosed that Tesla vehicles frequently fall short of achieving the range estimates advertised and the figures displayed by the vehicles’ own onboard equipment.

This revelation was supported by insights from experts who conducted testing and research on these vehicles.

Allegedly, approximately a decade ago, Tesla devised algorithms to generate overly optimistic driving range estimates visible on the vehicle’s dashboard.

Additionally, a “Diversion Team” was established by the company to manage and cancel service appointments related to range concerns, Reuters reported.

The genesis of this team, situated in Austin, Texas, stemmed from an overflow of service requests from Tesla owners who were disappointed by the actual vehicle performance compared to the company’s promoted estimates and the indications provided by the onboard range meters.

Individuals familiar with the situation confirmed the existence and purpose of this team.

Aside from this matter, Tesla is currently under investigation on multiple fronts. Federal auto safety regulators are scrutinizing Tesla’s Autopilot driver assistance system.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Attorney’s office in Manhattan is reportedly conducting an inquiry into Tesla’s use of corporate funds for a covert project referred to internally as a residence for CEO Elon Musk.

Sources privy to the situation shared this information with the Wall Street Journal, which also mentioned that a spokesperson from the federal prosecutors’ office refrained from commenting on the specifics of the probes, as reported in the Journal’s article.
