Special counsel election probe continues with focus on Trump fundraising

Special counsel Jack Smith is persistently pursuing his investigation into attempts to overturn the 2020 election, even a month after indicting Donald Trump for masterminding a wide-ranging conspiracy to maintain power.

This expansion of the inquiry raises the prospect that others may still find themselves in legal jeopardy.

Recent interviews with two witnesses have indicated that Smith is concentrating on the utilization of funds raised through baseless claims of voter fraud to support efforts to breach voting equipment in several states won by Joe Biden, as disclosed by sources familiar with the ongoing investigation.

During these interviews, prosecutors have directed their inquiries toward the involvement of former Trump attorney Sidney Powell, CNN reported in an exclusive article.

Invoices obtained by CNN reveal that Powell’s non-profit organization, Defending the Republic, contracted forensic firms that eventually gained access to voting equipment in four swing states won by Biden: Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Arizona.

Powell is currently facing criminal charges in Georgia, having been indicted by Atlanta-area district attorney Fani Willis last month.

Willis alleges that Powell played a role in coordinating and financing a multi-state scheme to illicitly access voting systems following the 2020 election.

Powell has entered a not guilty plea to these charges.
