A band of armed assailants launched an assault on a convoy of vehicles making its way from the United States into Mexico, resulting in injuries to three individuals, including some American citizens.

The Associated Press (AP) conveyed that this attack took place on a Saturday, unfolding on the bridge that links the town of Miguel Aleman to Roma, Texas, as detailed by the Tamaulipas state security department.

Initially, the department had reported nine casualties, but subsequent updates confirmed that three individuals sustained gunshot wounds, while an additional six experienced panic attacks, as reported by the AP.

A state official, speaking anonymously to the AP, revealed that the injured encompassed both Mexicans and Mexican Americans, The Hill reported.

Jorge Cuéllar, a spokesperson for Tamaulipas state security, informed the AP that those wounded were handed over to U.S. authorities.

Mexico’s National Migration Institute, in a press release, disclosed that the convoy consisted of 20 people, comprising 16 Mexicans and four Americans, all traveling in two vehicles—an van and a pickup truck.

The convoy was in the process of entering the Mexican state of Tamaulipas, an area grappling with escalating issues of violence and crime.

Earlier in the year, four Americans were abducted when crossing into this state, prompting the issuance of a “Do Not Travel” advisory by the State Department due to the prevailing crime and kidnapping concerns.
