A man suspected of a homicide in Ohio and multiple carjackings in Kentucky met his demise in a confrontation with West Virginia police outside a gas station, where he had taken three individuals hostage.
The cross-state pursuit of David Maynard, aged 54, culminated late Saturday at a Speedway station in a West Virginia town situated along the Ohio River.
A vigilant sergeant, upon stopping at the station, recognized the individual behind the counter as the suspect who had eluded troopers thus far, as per a statement from the West Virginia State Police.
Maynard brandished his firearm at the sergeant, prompting the involvement of a State Police Special Response Team in coordination with local law enforcement.
According to the official statement, a negotiator successfully secured the release of two hostages before Maynard requested a blanket to be placed at the door for the third hostage, the Associated Press reported.
Following Maynard’s exit and engagement with members of the State Police Special Response Team, officers discharged their firearms.
However, detailed information beyond this point was not released by West Virginia State Police, as reported by The Associated Press.
Maynard, hailing from Ironton, Ohio, succumbed to his injuries at a nearby hospital. Authorities confirmed the safe rescue of the third hostage, with no reported injuries among the officers involved.
The manhunt initially commenced when Ironton police responded to a shots fired report on Friday, discovering a 29-year-old woman bound with cords and Maynard’s 78-year-old stepfather deceased, as reported by WSAZ.
During the course of events, Maynard allegedly abducted two women at separate junctures in Kentucky, with one managing to free herself and contact 911 after reaching safety, while Maynard appropriated both their vehicles.
