Police have confirmed the capture of Daniel Abed Khalife, a former British soldier facing terrorism charges, who managed to escape from a London prison by concealing himself in a food delivery truck.

Khalife was apprehended on Saturday while riding a bicycle along a canal path to the west of London, concluding a four-day manhunt.

His escape from Wandsworth Prison’s kitchen occurred on Wednesday, during which he secured himself to the underside of a catering truck to exit the prison grounds, Military.com reported.

At the age of 21, Khalife awaited trial for alleged violations of Britain’s Official Secrets Act, accused of gathering information “that could be useful to an enemy” and planting counterfeit explosive devices at a military installation.

He had been discharged from the British army earlier in the year and vehemently denied the charges. His trial was scheduled for November.

The prison break incited a flurry of criticism, with political opponents attributing the escape to years of financial austerity policies by the United Kingdom’s ruling Conservative Party.

The government announced its commitment to an independent inquiry to ascertain how Khalife managed to elude the medium-security prison, which dates back to 1851 during Queen Victoria’s reign.
