According to court documents, federal prosecutors have brought charges against Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden, related to firearms offenses.
In a Delaware federal court indictment, Biden faces three counts associated with possessing a firearm while using narcotics.
Specifically, two counts pertain to Biden allegedly providing false information on a form when purchasing a Colt Cobra revolver in October 2018, claiming he was not using illegal drugs at the time.
The third count alleges that he was in possession of a firearm while using a narcotic, NBC News reported.
This significant indictment against the son of a sitting president comes in the wake of a failed plea deal that could have resolved a lengthy investigation into Hunter Biden.
It also coincides with House Republicans launching an impeachment inquiry aimed at obtaining bank records and other documents from both the president and his son.
Special counsel David Weiss is overseeing the case and had previously led the investigation.
Weiss, a Trump appointee, continued to serve as U.S. attorney for Delaware due to the sensitive and unique nature of the inquiry into a president’s son by the Justice Department, an entity within the executive branch headed by the president himself.
Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed Weiss as special counsel in August after negotiations concerning tax and gun-related charges fell apart.
The investigation initiated in 2018, a year prior to Joe Biden’s announcement of his candidacy for president, and primarily focused on Hunter Biden’s financial matters, according to a source familiar with the probe.
