In New Delhi, the police have conducted searches at the residences of well-known journalists associated with a left-leaning news organization recognized for its critical examination of the Indian government.

This action has been widely condemned by media organizations as an assault on press freedoms.

On Tuesday, Delhi police revealed in a brief statement that they had questioned 46 individuals and confiscated digital devices and documents for scrutiny as part of an investigation conducted under an anti-terror law, CNN reported.

Those subjected to questioning included journalists, editors, and contributors with affiliations to NewsClick, an independent news platform renowned for its outspoken critique of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration.

Authorities have reported the arrest of the founder and editor of the outlet, Prabir Purkayastha, along with a colleague, Amit Chakravarty.

An ongoing investigation is being pursued in connection with India’s Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, commonly known as UAPA.

Critics have described this anti-terror law as “draconian” and have noted its near-impossibility of securing bail for those detained under its provisions.

NewsClick, in response to the raids, characterized them as an “attempt to shut down and stifle independent and fearless voices that portray the story of the real India.”
