Following an unprecedented incursion into Israel by Hamas fighters, Israel’s defense minister has issued orders for a “complete siege” on the Gaza Strip.

Israel officially declared war on Sunday and authorized “significant military actions” in response to Saturday’s unexpected attack.

The conflict has resulted in over 1,100 casualties and thousands of injuries on both sides, the Associated Press reported.

On Monday, the defense minister’s announcement coincided with intense efforts by the Israeli military to locate and neutralize Hamas fighters in the southern regions of the country.

Tanks were deployed to secure breaches in the border fence while airstrikes pounded Gaza from above.

A spokesperson for Israel stated that the military had regained control of border communities that had been seized by Hamas fighters during the initial attack.

However, Palestinian militants continued to launch barrages of rockets, triggering air raid sirens in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.
